Cheap New Orleans Hornets


  • The New Orleans Hornets first put jerseys on their players in time for the campaign that started in 1988. At that time the National Basketball Association was in the middle of some rapid expansion that saw 4 new club added to the league in 4 years.
  • Most of the athletes in Charlotte (New Orleans) Hornets jerseys in the early years were already established NBA players, not like the typical expansion teams that field mostly young, inexperienced men. New Orleans hoped that by doing so they would be quick to become worthy of the post season success.
  • The club was going to be called the Charlotte Spirit but the club went instead for the Charlotte Hornets after the population of the city objected. The current name comes from the revolutionary war, when the British General Cornwallis commented about the resistance the British forces met in the area and said "There's a rebel behind every bush, it's a veritable nest of hornets."
  • The Charlotte Hornets chose 8th in the '88 annual draft and they took a man who stood 6 foot and 4 inches tall named Rex Chapman and put him in one of their jerseys.
  • The club began playing during the 88/89 campaign inside a brand new stadium worth $52,000,000 and could seat 23,698 screaming fans.
  • The biggest thing that was in this teams favor during the 1990 - 1991 crusade was the appearance of Muggsy Bogues who stood all of five foot three inches. Muggsy silenced his critics despite his being challenged vertically and became a quick, smart and very productive memeber of the team.
  • During the 1992 NBA Draft lottery, the franchise won the 2nd overall pick even though other teams had suffered through a much worse year in the win/loss column. They used the 2nd pick very well and chose a man out of Georgetown named Mr. Alonzo Mourning, who stood 6'10". His play reminded people of Patrick Ewing in the sense that he was already a mature defensive athlete. His constant scowl on the court came to typify his play as a real competitor.
  • The team was one of the NBA's best teams the year of 1994 / 1995 when they achieved a season of 50 wins and also set a club record with that 50-32 ticker. The newly returned Michael Jordan had an effect on Chicago that year and they ousted the club from the postseason very quickly.
  • The club provides employment for Hugo who is a large blue bee. BEEing famous for his one of a kind "Bug on the Windshield Dunk," Hugo is a 3 time winner of the NBA Mascot Slam Dunk Title.
  • Unlike their cousins the honeybees, the bug that this club is named after are notorious for being violent, bad-tempered, and generally a real hazard to pets and humans alike. This clubs namesake have been know to repeatedly sting totally innocent passerbys with little or nothing that provoked them. Bees on the other hand are known for being peace loving and never attack unless there are no other options available to the little darlings. A bee soon loses it's life when it uses it stinger as it leaves a bit of itslef behind in the victim.
    *Bees will always make their hives in areas that are not well travelled and look for spots that are out of the way. This teams nakesake make their nest in the most inappropriate spots like right outside your door.
  • The only use of this name in an acronym is "Hybrid Opto-Electronic Ring Network"
  • After Katrina in 2005, the club played 35 games in Oklahoma City and six in Baton Rouge
