  • The Portland Trail Blazers and their jerseys first played in the league in 1970. As with all expansion clubs, the Portland Trail Blazers and the athletes in their jerseys, had trouble taking on the more established organizations.
  • In 1977, after a mere 7 campaigns, the Portland Trail Blazers and the men in their jerseys claimed the Title.
  • After a contest to name the new club, the Portland Trailblazers was chosen. The more popular choice was the Pioneers, but that name had already been put on jerseys by a local College.
  • The Trail Blazers first put their jerseys on their 1st draft pick a man named Geoff Petrie and LeRoy Ellis, who was taken from the Bullets roster during the expansion draft.
  • In the season that spanned 1974 and 1975 the club brought in Lenny Wilkens to wear it's jerseys. This wasn't the only change as onto the scene stepped Bill Walton, who himself was a 3x Player of the Year from college.
  • The season that followed was historic for the club. After a 49 win campaign, they breezed through the post season and captured the NBA Title. Chicago, Denver, and LA were the teams beaten to reach the finals were they met Philadelphia.
  • They couldn't find their groove the next playoff season after a steller regular campaign. They quickly exited and for the next few years in a row did the same thing consistently.
  • By the 1987 / 1988 season, the organization started to emerge once again as being competitive. They did so on the backs of up and comers like Clyde Drexler and Terru Porter. Other notable events in 1987 included:
    * President Reagan put his name on a classified document that let America sell weapons to Iran.
    * The Soap "Bold and Beautiful" made it's debut.
    * Baseball's Cal Ripken had a streak of 8,243 consecutive innings broken. His consecutive games streak would continue for some time.
    * "Star Trek: The Next Generation," made it's debut. The show started slowly but once trekkers caught on, it eclipsed the original in popularity, originality, and the number of episodes made.
  • Many animals that are naturally found in America's Northwest were considered as potential mascots. For example, raccoons, eagles, hawks, bobcats, and mountain lions were all looked at with a view to how fan friendly and athletic they were. Ultimately a mountain lion was concluded to best embody all that was needed in a mascot. The new character was named "Blaze," and is said to be the first of a new type of cat, the "Trail Cat."
