• The San Antonio Spurs have retired 5 jerseys belonging to Johnny Moore, James Silas, Sean Elliott, George Gervin, and David Robinson.
• The San Antonio Spurs players did not always were Spurs jerseys. The club started it's life in May of 1967 and were then known as the Dallas Chaparrals.
• In 1973 the club moved to San Antonio and was renamed the Spurs and they played their 1st match on 10/10/73, in front of 5,879 paying customers at a place called the "HemisFair Arena".
• A Chaparral is also known as a Roadrunner made famous in the cartoons and is the official bird of New Mexico. It's state flower is the yucca flower.
• The team name "Chaparrals" came about after a suit with the team was having dinner at the Chaparral Club. When they saw the Chaparral on the napkin at the club they thought it would be a good mascot.
• The date was 6/17/76 when the club along with the Nets, the Nuggets, and the Pacers all made the jump to the National Basketball Association. The ABA officially died a short time later.
• The team moniker is actually a pointy attachment that goes on the boots of cowboys to get a horse to run faster.
• During the 2005 season, the coyote mascot of the clubs was ejected from game as they played the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Ref thought he was being too aggresive in mockingly challenging the opposing players to a fight.
• During 1977, the roof of their stadium (the Hemifair arena) was actually raised to make room for extra seats. By doing the renovations, 6000 extra seats were added.
• The Club was the top scoring team in the entire NBA during the 1976 -1977 campaign. That was thanks to George Gervin mainly, and Larry Kenon to a lesser extent.
• They got off to a great start in the 1978 - 1979 season by absolutely demolishing Milwaukee by a score of 153 - 111 in the first game at home that year.
• In the 2005 annual ranking of sports teams in North America, ESPN went and ranked this club #2 in all of pro sport, including all the major leagues, MLB, NBA, NFL, and NHL. The NHL's Chicago Blackhawks are the worst, coming in dead last.
• George Gervin, who was known as the "Iceman" during his playing days and didn't seem to mind, carried this franchise to 5 division titles during the '70s and '80s. George was the 1st guard in National Basketball Association history who won scoring titles back-to-back.
• On 5/17/87 the club was happy to announce it was victorious in the Draft Lottery. Using pick number one the organization showed they wanted to win by choosing a seven foot center by the name of Robinson. But David Robinsons was not to make an immediate impact, as he was a off with the navy for two years.
