- The Denver Nuggets were called the Denver Rockets upon entering the ABA in 1967. As fate would have it, there was another young team called the San Diego Rockets that also started play that year. So when they began thinking of joining the NBA, the Denver Nuggets changed the name on their jerseys so as not to upset anyone.
- The name "Nuggets" on the Denver teams jerseys is in reference to the nineteenth century gold rush that swept through Colorado. There is also some history to the name, as a team with Nuggets on their jerseys hd already played in the NBA once before in 1949 through 1950.
- All through the initial campaigns in their new NBA surroundings, the Denver club and the men in their jerseys were very talented and able to hold their own. Big names such as David Thompson and Dan Issel helped lead the way to becoming a competitive team very quickly.
- An absolute coup for the struggling ABA was when David Thompson, who was chosen by the Atlanta Hawks when they drafted him number one in the 1975 NBA Draft, and had also been picked number one in the ABA Draft by the Virginia Squires, ultimately chose to sign with this team of the ABA. He belonged to this club through a series of moves my Virginia Squires. It was the very 1st time in over 9 years that the #1 drafted player chose the ABA instead of the NBA.
- By June of 1976, the ABA was no more, and this club and their fellow ex-pats the Nets, San Antonio Spurs, and Indiana Pacers all joined up with the NBA.
- An all star lineup for this club could be as follows: at Guard David Thompson, also at Guard Ralph Simpson, playing Forward Alex English, at Forward Spencer Haywood, and claiming his spot at Center, Dan Issel.
- A secondary line up that would give the first team a run for their money might include; at Guard Lafayette Lever, at Guard Larry Jones, at Forward Kiki Vandeweghe,at Forward Bobby Jones, and at Center Dikembe Mutomho.
- The club has retire a few numbers, for example #2 Alex English, #33 David Thompson, #40 Byron Beck, #44 Dan Issel, and #432 which was the number of wins that Doug Moe had while coaching the club.
- The official mascot of this club is Rocky the Mountain Lion. Rocky has been around for 14 years.
- This club is a part of Kroenke Sports Enterprises. They are a huge company that also controls the stadium called the Pepsi Center, the NHL's Avalanche, the Crush of the AFL, and the Lacrosse playing Mammoths.
- The apparent fascination with the name Rockets is totally understandable when you pause and consider that the year was 1967, and from 1969 to 1972 a dozen astronauts would walk on the surface of the Moon. Whether or not the pictures were fake does not mean that the rockets themselves were fake. : )
