    * Hank Aaron tied Ruth's dinger record when he hit his 714th in Cincinnati.
    * President Richard Nixon made the announcement that he would resign his office after damaging news that he was involved in the Watergate scandal. Almost immediately the new President Gerald Ford pardoned him for anything the may or may not have done.
    * The New York Times published a front page article damage being done to the ozone layer by chlorofluorocarbons.
